Six Reasons Why So Many Canadians Choose To Learn more about Travel Insurance Online
Back in the day, we always used to get travel insurance from our travel agent. Now we book almost everything online, from flights to hotels to buses and even tours.
Seems like a lot of Canadians are with us on this one, and choosing to get travel insurance online as well. Here are six reasons why getting travel insurance online is so popular with us folks in Canada:
Comparison Shopping
Many agents only sell travel insurance from one or two companies, limiting your options. When you get get quotes through a comparison site, you’ll likely have more companies and policies to choose from.
Better Prices
Since you can compare so many different policies online, you’re likely to find a good policy at a better price.
Convenience
Can you remember the last time you used a travel agent to book a flight or hotel? Many of us can’t. When you’re booking your flight and hotel online, it’s just a few extra clicks to add on travel insurance, all from the comfort of your own home.
It’s Fast
When you learn about travel insurance online, you can sign up for your policy, pay with a credit card, and get an immediate email confirmation.
It Comes with the Credit Card
Many Canadians choose to get their travel insurance as an add on perk on their credit card when they apply for their credit card online.
You can Still Ask Questions
Even if you go online, it’s a simple matter to call the travel insurance company and get any nagging questions answered.
Where to learn more about travel insurance online
Price comparison websites, like the one from Best Quote Travel Insurance Agency, or Rates.ca let you quickly compare quotes for travel insurance from several different companies at once, and can save you lots of time compared with looking at one company at a time. Type in a few details about your trip, and compare policy coverage and prices to help narrow down your choice.
BestQuote and Rates.ca are the two largest price comparison websites for travel insurance in Canada, with a bit of a difference: While BestQuote is a licensed agency (able to answer your questions and offer advice by phone or email) in all provinces except QC, Rates.ca is not licensed – they simply provide pricing information and allow you to purchase through the insurance company’s weblink – slightly less personal and no room for advice but similar comparable quotes. Both sites offer lots of written articles about the ins and outs of travel insurance for your pre-purchase research.

You can also learn more about travel insurance online from almost any company that sells travel insurance, including RBC, Blue Cross and PC Financial.
I honestly wouldn’t buy travel insurance online because it can be quite complex and not every policy might be suited for you. It’s good to speak to someone, actually it’s good to contact a couple of different insurance brokers to double check what you’re being told. I went through it a few months ago and would have been screwed if I had listened to the first person I had spoken to.
Also, World Nomads is not available to residents of Quebec.
It all depends on your needs. I agree that you might as well if you’re the regular person taking a vacation for a couple of weeks. But if your situation more complex you have to speak to people.

Hi Frank. Thanks for your comment.
I see no problem buying travel insurance online for the vast majority of people however if you have health issues that aren’t properly addressed on the form or have a question then I agree it’s a good idea to talk to an agent.
We also always recommend that people shop around a bit and suggest people check out sites like Kanetix and get a price comparison before purchasing anywhere else. It’s always good to have a ballpark figure to work on and to make sure you aren’t being hosed no matter what you’re buying.
As to World Nomads not covering Quebec you’re correct. Quebec has more legislation and red tape regarding everything from lotteries to insurance than any other province and as a result you guys are often excluded from giveaways and whatnot that apply to the rest of Canada. On the plus side you guys have better price protection and cheaper childcare so it kind of evens out. 😉
